How We Measure Luxury
WealthyShopping is the definitive global index of luxury retail pricing. We map and rank the most expensive stores on Earth using real price data, proprietary methodology, and rigorous editorial standards — so you never have to guess where the world's most exclusive shopping experiences actually are.
The Average Price Tag (APT) Methodology
Our proprietary pricing system is the backbone of every ranking on WealthyShopping. Here is exactly how it works.
Entry Ticket
The lowest common purchase available at the store — the price of admission to the brand. For a watch boutique, this might be a steel sport model. For a jewelry salon, an entry-level pendant or ring. This establishes the floor of the store's pricing universe.
Median Ticket
The typical purchase — what most customers actually buy. Calculated from the middle of our sampled SKUs, this figure represents the store's core price positioning. It is the single most important number in determining a store's ranking.
Icon Ticket
The signature product — the item the brand is known for. The Birkin at Hermès, the Nautilus at Patek Philippe, the Love bracelet at Cartier. This anchors the store's aspirational positioning and captures brand-defining price points.
Max Ticket
The upper range — the most expensive item available through the store, including bespoke, haute couture, high jewelry, and made-to-order commissions. This captures the ceiling of what the store can sell and signals its true luxury tier.
We sample 10–50 SKUs per store depending on category and inventory depth. All prices are normalized to USD using daily exchange rates at the time of verification. The four tickets are then weighted to produce a single APT figure: entry (10%), median (45%), icon (30%), max (15%). This weighting ensures the ranking reflects the typical shopping experience while accounting for the extremes that define luxury positioning.
Ultra Tier Index (UTI)
A 0–10 composite score measuring signals of extreme pricing, exclusivity, and rarefied access.
Haute Couture & Bespoke
Does the store offer made-to-measure, bespoke, or haute couture services? Stores with custom commission capabilities score higher than those selling only ready-to-wear.
High Jewelry Salon
Presence of a dedicated high jewelry or grand complications room, private viewing suites, or invitation-only collections with pieces exceeding six or seven figures.
Appointment-Only Access
Is the store or a portion of its inventory restricted to appointments, private clients, or VIP-only events? Gated access is a strong signal of ultra-tier positioning.
Made-to-Order Ratio
The proportion of inventory that is made-to-order versus off-the-shelf. A high M/O ratio indicates deeper exclusivity and typically correlates with higher average pricing.
The UTI is used as a secondary ranking signal. Two stores with similar APT figures will be differentiated by their UTI — the store with higher exclusivity signals ranks above the one with a more accessible inventory mix. A UTI of 8.0 or above earns the store an "Ultra" badge in our index.
Credibility Scoring System
Every store in our index receives a 0–100 confidence rating. Here is what goes into it.
SKU Sample Size
How many products were sampled to calculate the APT. Stores with 30+ verified SKUs score highest. Fewer than 10 results in a significant confidence penalty.
Data Source Diversity
The number and quality of independent sources confirming the pricing data. A store verified by official brand pages, resale platforms, and journalism scores higher than one sourced from a single channel.
Recency of Verification
How recently the pricing data was last validated. Data verified within the current quarter scores highest. Data older than 12 months is flagged and deprioritized in rankings.
Transparency & Consistency
Does the store publish prices publicly? Do prices from different sources converge? Stores that list prices on their website and show cross-source consistency earn higher transparency scores.
Stores scoring below 60 are flagged as "Low Confidence" in our index. These stores remain listed but carry a visible disclaimer. We will never rank a store in our Top 25 unless its Credibility Score exceeds 75.
Data Sources
Where our pricing data comes from — and why source diversity matters.
Primary Sources
Official brand websites, in-store price lists, authorized retailer pages, and brand-published catalogs. These are the gold standard and receive the highest weighting in our credibility algorithm. We verify directly whenever possible.
Authenticated Resale Platforms
Chrono24, The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective, 1stDibs, and other authenticated marketplaces. Resale data helps us validate retail pricing and identify market premiums on waitlisted or discontinued items.
Journalism & Industry Reports
Luxury industry reporting from Business of Fashion, Robb Report, Hodinkee, JCK, and financial publications. Brand annual reports, earnings calls, and auction house records (Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips) supplement our primary data.
What We Never Use
We never source pricing from unverified social media posts, anonymous forums, influencer content, or user-submitted data without independent verification. If we cannot confirm a price from at least two independent sources, it is excluded from our calculations.
Update Cadence
Different categories move at different speeds. Our update schedule reflects that reality.
Quarterly Updates
Watches & Handbags. These categories experience frequent price adjustments, waitlist fluctuations, and secondary market volatility. We re-verify pricing every 3 months to keep rankings current.
Biannual Updates
Fashion Ready-to-Wear, Shoes & Streetwear. Aligned with the spring/summer and fall/winter collection cycles. Pricing is re-verified after each major collection launch.
Annual Updates
Furniture, Fragrance & Art Galleries. These categories have lower price volatility. Full re-verification occurs annually, with interim updates triggered by major product launches or price restructuring.
Event-Driven Updates
All Categories. Major events — brand price increases, new flagship openings, store closures, or auction records — trigger immediate re-verification regardless of the scheduled cadence.
Every store listing displays its last-verified date and the applicable update cycle. If data is older than the scheduled cadence, the store's Credibility Score is automatically reduced until re-verification is completed.
Our Standards
The principles that govern every ranking, every score, and every page on this platform.
Rankings Are Never Purchasable
No store, brand, or advertiser can pay for a higher position in our index. Rankings are determined solely by our APT methodology and verified pricing data. This is non-negotiable.
No Affiliate-Driven Rankings
We do not adjust rankings based on affiliate commissions or commercial relationships. If we link to a store, the link does not influence that store's position. Editorial and commercial operations are completely separated.
Transparent Methodology
Our scoring systems are published in full on this page. We do not rely on opaque algorithms or undisclosed criteria. If you want to understand why a store ranks where it does, the methodology is here.
Reader-First Obligation
Our obligation is to the people using this platform, not to the brands we index. We will not suppress unfavorable data, remove stores at a brand's request, or inflate scores to maintain relationships.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Average Price Tag (APT) methodology?
APT is WealthyShopping's proprietary pricing system. We sample 10–50 SKUs per store and calculate four price tickets: entry (lowest common purchase), median (typical purchase), icon (signature product), and max (upper range). These are normalized to USD and weighted — entry at 10%, median at 45%, icon at 30%, max at 15% — to produce a single APT figure that represents the store's overall price positioning.
How is the Ultra Tier Index (UTI) calculated?
The UTI is a 0–10 composite score measuring signals of extreme pricing and exclusivity. Factors include: haute couture or bespoke availability, high jewelry salons, appointment-only access, private client services, presence of six-figure or seven-figure items, invitation-only product lines, and the ratio of made-to-order versus ready-to-wear inventory. A UTI of 8.0 or above earns the "Ultra" badge.
What sources does WealthyShopping use for pricing data?
Primary sources include official brand websites, in-store price lists, and authorized retailer pages. Secondary sources include authenticated resale platforms (Chrono24, The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective), luxury journalism and industry reports (Business of Fashion, Robb Report, Hodinkee), brand annual reports, and auction house records from Christie's, Sotheby's, and Phillips. We require at least two independent sources to confirm any price point.
How often is WealthyShopping data updated?
Update cadence varies by category: watches and handbags are updated quarterly due to high price volatility, fashion ready-to-wear and shoes every 6 months aligned with seasonal collections, and furniture, fragrance, and art galleries annually. Major events like brand-wide price increases trigger immediate re-verification regardless of the scheduled cadence. Every listing displays its last-verified date.
Are WealthyShopping rankings influenced by advertising or affiliate deals?
No. WealthyShopping rankings are never purchasable. Store positions are determined solely by our APT methodology and verified pricing data. We do not accept payment for higher rankings, and no affiliate relationship influences a store's position in our index. Editorial independence is a foundational principle of the platform — commercial and editorial operations are completely separated.
What is the Credibility Score and how is it determined?
The Credibility Score is a 0–100 rating reflecting confidence in a store's pricing data. It accounts for the number of SKUs sampled, the number and quality of data sources, recency of the last verification, store pricing transparency, and cross-source consistency. Stores scoring below 60 are flagged as "Low Confidence" and carry a visible disclaimer. No store can appear in our Top 25 with a Credibility Score below 75.
Can stores request to be added or removed from the index?
Stores can submit information for consideration, but inclusion is determined by our editorial team based on category relevance, city coverage, and data availability. We do not remove stores from the index at a brand's request. Our obligation is to our readers, not to the stores we rank. If a store believes our data is inaccurate, they can contact us with supporting documentation and we will investigate.
